Has Muslim fundamentalism always been an issue or did it previously coincide with US foreign policy?
In 1979, the US supported Muslim fundamentalists against the Soviets in order to ensure their sphere of influence. Post 2003 foreign policy is the same as any post WWII foreign policy in the USA. It is imperative to gain access to trade routes and other strategic areas in the current geopolitical order. It is not that Muslim fundamentalism has become a new threat, but rather it was the perfect excuse to justify subsequent invasions. Why then do people talk about how Muslim fundamentalism and terrorism is a new issue? Or that it's evil and must be destroyed? What about during the Soviet-Afghanistan? Who was evil? The muslim fundamentalists or the Soviets? Obviously foreign policy changes, and excuses like we must destroy such and such group because they are a threat to US stability are merely a justification to continue US imperialism. Why do people buy this? 30 years from now, who will be the new bogeyman?
