Squishy animal that lives at the beach?

I was at the beach the other day in the Puget Sound, and I kept coming across these little squishy things sticking out of the sand. They had holes in the middle and appeared to be breathing. They had holes in the middle, and almost looked like tiny volcanoes. When I touched them, they shot out water and quickly burrowed into the sand. What the heck were they?
