Is there anything that works like stripper to aid in removing texture from drywall ceilings.?

If it is not too heavily coated it is pretty easy but time consuming to just spray with hot water and use a scr or drywall knife. Do small areas at a time soaking with hot water softens and dissolves the compound and makes it easy to remove the majority of it. Some sanding will be needed for a real smooth ceiling along with some repair. I did this to mine and it looks so much better.
